Yes, Groupon Is Enjoying Your Speculation As To Why Its CEO's Salary Is $756.72

We recently noted that Groupon CEO Andrew Mason has an odd official salary: He took only $756.72 in cash last year. (He’s mostly paid in stock, of course.)We asked Groupon how it arrived at that number for Mason, and it turns out that the company prefers the mystery. A spokesperson emailed us this:

“As for how he arrived at $757, the guesses are far more entertaining than the truth! ;)”

One Business Insider reader commented:

My guess is if you put this all in an accounting system, someone who makes $757 in cash and $7186 in non-cash income in Chicago IL has to withhold $756 in various taxes on their W-2.

That sounds reasonable, but this is Andrew Mason we’re talking about, the naked yoga guy. Surely the answer is stranger than that? Here are a couple of ideas to get you rolling:

  • 75672 is the zip code of Marshall, Texas.
  • 756.72 is the code for a strain of strep used by lab researchers.
  • When rounded on the proxy form, his salary is $757. Which is the type of jet Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin own. Is this Mason’s ambition, too?

Use the comments board below to explain your own theories, and if they’re interesting we’ll do a roundup next week.
