The New York Times reports: “President Ali Abdullah Saleh of Yemen suffered injuries far more extensive than previously known in an attack on his presidential palace last week, with burns over 40 per cent of his body, Yemeni officials and Western diplomats said Tuesday.” The Yemeni president’s condition precludes him from returning to Yemen any time soon.  With his face badly charred and burns up and down his back, he will almost certainly be in a great deal of pain, which would require sedation at least and (more likely) acute care hospitalization.

With President Saleh out of action, the fate of Yemen hangs in the balance. Saudi Arabia (which shares a border with Yemen) is especially concerned that the country might descend into chaos
