This week’s apparent discovery of radioactive polonium on the possessions and clothing of Palestinian Liberation organisation (PLO) Yasser Arafat looked like it could have finally solved the mystery surrounding the cause of his death in 2004 — it was poison.Unfortunately, it looks like the new theory, as put forward by Al Jazeera after an 8 month investigation, is only heightening the speculation and conspiracy theories.
The Jerusalem Post spoke to Dr. Ely Karmon a chemicals expert from Herzliya Interdisciplinary centre’s Institute for Counter-Terrorism:
“If it had been used to for poisoning, minimal levels should be seen now. Yet much higher levels were found. Someone planted the polonium much later,” Karmon said.
“Because of the half life of the substance, the conclusion is that the polonium is much more fresh,” he added.
The response seems to back up a report from French newspaper Le Figaro which argued that the symptoms did not mach polonium poisoning.
