Here’s an interesting speech from Yahoo’s new CEO Scott Thompson in 2009.
Speaking at Web 2.0 about innovation, he says email has been made obsolete by text messages and Facebook. He’s basing that on what his kids tell him.
This matters because Yahoo’s business is largely based on email. It still pulls in hundreds of millions of people to Yahoo Mail and then sends them to its various other properties.
But, he’s right. Email, at least as the centre of a business, is obsolete. More and more email is being seen on mobile phones where Yahoo can’t funnel people into its sites.
