Wu Minxia of China, won gold in the synchronised 3m springboard event becoming the first diver to ever win golds in three consecutive Olympics.Wu made headlines after her father told the Shanghai Morning Post he and his family once hid her grandparents’ death and her mother’s battle with cancer from the diver to ensure she could solely focus on Olympic training.
But this is the saddest quote that came from Wu’s father:
“We’ve known for years that our daughter doesn’t belong to us any more. I don’t even dare to think about things like enjoying family happiness.”
When Wu was 16, she was away from home and at an installed government aquatics training centre, according to Martin Rogers of Yahoo!. This is very typical of Chinese athletes training to become Olympians.
Wu’s father said they barely talk to her because she is too busy training, and they’re left to keep up with her on her Weibo account.
