Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson is in a LOT of hot water for allowing his employers, employees, and shareholders to believe he had a degree that he does not actually have.Lying on your resume is not OK, and neither is exaggerating in a job interview.

But what should you do if you think you did one of those things by accident, and you don’t want to end up in the mess Thompson is in later in your life?

Chuck Wardell, the CEO of executive search firmĀ Witt/Kieffer, has some advice: be honest.

Be honest quickly.

In a Q&A, he told us: “If you’re ever in an interview and you feel like you exaggerated, send a quick email after saying there are other people who deserve credit that you forgot to mention. People aren’t trying to play gotcha.”
