Former aide to John Edwards, John Davis took the stand this morning in the trial over whether the Edwards campaign illegally used over $1 million in campaign contributions to hide the existence of Edwards’ mistress, Rielle Hunter.
Davis recalled that he was surprised to see Rielle Hunter going to John Edwards’ hotel room after her contract with the campaign had not been renewed.
According to a rundown of Davis’ testimony, from the Huffington Post, Hunter confronted Davis about their run-in moments later:
“She told me that she and Sen. Edwards were very much in love. And that he was concerned that I had seen her,” Davis said.
The next day, Edwards called Davis into his room and denied that he was having an affair with Hunter.
“He told me she was crazy and that we should make sure she didn’t talk to him,” Davis said, adding that he was satisfied with his boss’s explanation.
Davis also testified that later that year he overheard a speakerphone conversation between Edwards and Hunter, “I heard him ask Rielle if she was showing yet,” Davis said.
What a soap opera!
