With the Bruins recent win in the Stanley Cup Finals, the city of Boston moved into a tie with Los Angeles for most championships (7) in the four major sports since 2000. ESPN the Magazine even dedicated a recent issue to Boston’s rise to dominance. But since that magazine cover hit, the New England Patriots blew a 21-0 lead to the Bills, the Boston Red Sox suffered the biggest September collapse in Major League Baseball history, and the ageing Boston Celtics are in danger of having their last hope for another title washed away by the NBA lockout.
With the city of Boston reeling, the state of Wisconsin has now moved to the forefront of the sporting universe with a trio of dominant sports teams that are all eyeing championships…
Milwaukee Brewers: After winning the National League Central with 96 wins, the Brewers are in the NL Divisional series for the second time in four years. And after winning games one and two, they are now one win away from winning their first postseason series since their trip to the World Series in 1982.
Green Bay Packers: The Pack are the defending Super Bowl champions and are one of only two remaining undefeated teams in the NFL through four weeks.
Wisconsin Badgers: The Badgers football teams is off to a 5-0 start. Their 48-17 drubbing of the Nebraska Cornhuskers has them ranked fourth in the AP poll and thinking about their first-ever national championship.
OK, so Wisconsin isn’t going to reach Bostonian levels of dominance. But for one year, they have a shot to sit atop the sports universe.
