'Why don’t you go back to Iran you terrorist': Labor senator Sam Dastyari racially abused at a Melbourne pub

Labor senator Sam Dastyari was racially abused by members of the right wing group Patriot Blue at a pub in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

A group of men surrounded the Iranian-born senator while he was at the bar, calling him a “terrorist” and a “monkey”.

“Why don’t you go back to Iran you terrorist,” one of the men said.

They filmed the incident and posted it on their Facebook page.

They continue to heckle the senator, asking “what race is Islam” and whether the drinks he was buying were “halal certified”.

Dastyari maintained composed during the incident, responding by calling the men racists.

He was backed up my Labor MP Tim Watts who said into their camera “What race is dickhead?”

Dastyari took to his Facebook following the event to say that while he doesn’t normally like to post about such people because “it gives them oxygen” he felt the incident was an exception.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has commented on the incident, saying there should be “zero tolerance” for racial abuse.

“There is no place for racial vilification in Australia,” he told the Nine Network.

Labor leader Bill Shorten echoed Turnbull’s sentiment, saying he was “disgusted” by the behaviour of the men, and despite it Dastyari remains in “good spirits”.

“What is this country coming to, when you can’t go out and have a meal without being abused by idiots, and by racist idiots?” he told Channel Seven.
