Mobster James “Whitey” Bulger’s girlfriend was sentenced to eight years in prison Tuesday for hiding her partner from the police for 16 years.Catherine Grieg’s lawyer said that Bulger is “still the love of her life” and she has no regrets for helping him stay on the run, according to AP.
“Why people fall in love has been debated since before Shakespeare’s sonnets,” her lawyer wrote in a memorandum asking for a shorter sentence.
“The truth of the matter is that she was and remained in love with Mr. Bulger,” he added.
He claimed that the only crime she committed was falling in love with Bulger, Boston.com reported.
She pleaded guilty to three charges, including conspiracy to harbor a fugitive.
She was reportedly hiding Bulger in her two-bedroom apartment in Santa Monica before his arrest in June, 2011.
Bulger is awaiting sentencing on 19 murder counts, according to The Patriot Ledger.
