Max Read at Gawker has uncovered the secret of Subway’s perplexing avocado graph. The graph appears in a Subway commercial with Apolo Anton Ohno and Laila Ali that has aired a ton on NBC during the Olympics.
It’s unclear what the creatives behind the ad actually meant to signify. The only thing that’s clear is the “avocado” is increasing exponentially, for some reason.
Fortunately, Read has found the answer.
Here’s what the folks at Subway told him:
“Given the sports science nature of the spot, the graph was designed to draw the eye upward in trend – a trait we typically perceive as positive.
“In this case, we thought of the upward (positive) trend as related to taste, as in Avocado increasing the taste factor of said sandwich.”
That means that avocado is the x-axis, and taste is the y-axis.
And now we know.
