On that first day, make sure you treat everyone with respect, don’t cross the cool kids, and learn everything you can.Or, at least, that’s what users of Quora – a question-and-answer website – advise.
Quora users were asked to describe the first day of a prison sentence, and according to respondents, that first day is a whirlwind of confusion, fear, and learning the ropes.
“It’s an overload…from the minute you start to see the facility on the horizon. The day goes by quick, lots of movement, lots of ‘hurry up’ and ‘wait’ but the real ‘first day’ is the day you wake up and find yourself in a cell,” user Tulio Cardozo said.
“The emotional content of the experience is frankly; confusion…and fear. What do you do, where do you go, when do we eat…why does everyone want to know if I’m their ‘homey?'” Cardozo added.
Inmate James Houston had an even more dramatic experience, claiming he lost a considerable amount of weight because he was “unable to eat for a couple of weeks after getting sentenced.”
“When I was first sentenced to prison, I remember feeling as though if given the chance I would have abandoned myself. It was probably the first time I could remember feeling lonely and actually being uncomfortable with it,” Houston wrote.
Quora user Michael Brown equated the fear of beginning a prison sentence to the uncertainty of starting a new job — you’re simply scared of the unknown.
However, Brown found a silver lining in his prison experience.
“What good can come out of going to prison?” he wrote. “Well if school is available take it, whatever it is. Not only does it look good to people like parole board, it keeps you busy and you learn new things.”
