The word is out. It’s official. Apple is launching the iPhone 4S on October 14.The 4S is a zippy version of the current iPhone 4. While the two devices may look the same on the outside, the insides are where the 4S will really shine.

We gathered the most common questions we’ve seen about the iPhone 4S and answered them for you right here.

What does it look like?

The iPhone 4S looks exactly like the iPhone 4. Aside from the '4S' label on the back, you won't notice a difference.

What kind of processor does it have?

Apple used its own dual-core A5 processor in the iPhone 4S. It's the same processor that powers the iPad 2 and provides better graphics and speed.

What's new with the camera?

Apple greatly improved the camera in the iPhone 4S. It will shoot photos at 8 MP and take full 1080p HD video.

What's new on the software end?

The iPhone 4S ships with iOS 5, which we've been testing since it was previewed in June. Some key features include: iMessage, better notifications, and deep Twitter integration.

What is this Siri thing?

Siri is the new voice-controlled feature that lets you do everything from checking the weather to booking movie tickets, just by talking to your phone. You can also dictate text from the keyboard. Siri will only be available on the iPhone 4S.

Will it be 4G?

Well, that depends on your definition of '4G.'

The iPhone 4S will run on HSPA networks, a technology that is a bit faster than the 3G connection you're used to. Apple claimed the iPhone 4S can achieve speeds of 14.4 Mbps. That's hardly realistic. We've tested other HSPA phones, and carriers like AT&T average around 4 Mbps in NYC.

Also, AT&T will be the only U.S. carrier that can give you those faster speeds for now.

Will it run on my network?

The iPhone 4S is a 'world phone,' meaning it runs on GSM and CDMA networks. That covers all four major U.S. carriers. But T-Mobile customers will have to buy an unlocked iPhone 4S at full price to use it.

Which carriers in the U.S. will sell the iPhone?

AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint will all sell the iPhone at the discounted prices with a two-year contract. This will be the first iPhone model Sprint is able to sell.

How much will it cost?

If you sign a new, two-year agreement with your carrier, the iPhone 4S will cost:

  • $199 for 16 GB
  • $299 for 32 GB
  • $399 for 64 GB

When can you buy it?

Pre-orders begin online October 7. You can order from Apple, AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint.

The phone will start shipping on October 14. You can also buy the iPhone 4S in stores on October 14.
