reports that the progressive old guard is going to be joining the Wall Street protestors in Zuccotti Park on Wednesday.
The two biggest names, and best mobilizers, are The Working Families Party and MoveOn.org.
Moveon.org has a teeny bit of coverage of what’s been going on their site, suggesting what we already know— that they’re late to the game.
But they’ll come in swinging.
Here’s a list of the sign-ons:
- New York Communities for Change
- The United Federation of Teachers, 32BJ SEIU
- 1199 SEIU
- Workers United
- Transport Workers
- Union Local 100
And there was even a rumour flying around that Radiohead would play for the protestors at 4PM today, as they’re in NYC right now.
The celebrities are rallying too. Hip-hop mugul Russel Simmons (@UncleRUSH) has been using his Twitter feed to rally support for Occupy Wall Street. That would be no big deal, except for the fact that he has 966,907 followers. He’s also said that he wants to write the protestors a check.
They could use it, because the exansion is real. Yesterday, one protest attendee told us that the demonstrations were spreading to 66 cities. We were sceptical, but then we started noticing all of these new Twitter handles popping up… and getting followers immediately.

That’s just a few.
In other incredibly relevant news, the only man who may be able to rain on this parade, Hizzoner, Mayor Mike Bloomberg, said “we’ll see” if the protestors would be able to stay in the park indefinitely.
“The right to protest is part of our culture. It’s also true that there are other societal concerns. You’re worried about sanitation and you’re worried about lots of different laws on the books,” he said on his Friday morning radio show with John Gambling.
When we checked in on the protestors around 11 this morning, they were doing announcements in their usual call and repeat style. The discussion was about having a working group on police relations tomorrow because of recent security issues. Also, they now want to keep the park free of drugs and alcohol.
