The Weather Channel passed another mobile milestone yesterday, according to CEO David Kenny: The 90 millionth Weather Channel app was downloaded.Kenny told the Smarter Mobile Marketing (SM2) conference in New York that The Weather Channel “is the No.1 media on mobile, ahead of email.”
“Yesterday we crossed a threshold. Yesterday the 90 millionth Weather Channel app was downloaded,” he said. “We had 600 million interactions with Weather Channel during Isaac,” he said, referring to the week in which the storm hit.
One huge advantage is that during a storm when the power is out, “you need media that runs on a battery,” Kenny said.
Kenny also hinted at the size of Weather Channel’s mobile ad revenues. He said CPM’s — cost per thousand impressions — “are pretty much the same between mobile and the web,” but that in about 24 months the company will become “mobile led” in terms of revenues.
Weather channel’s cable and digital ad revenues are currently split about 50-50, he said.
