There are luxury cars, and then there are gilded luxury cars. Over the last couple of years, a lot of our billionaire friends have been gifting themselves gold-plated cars adorned with precious gems. And while some of them look horrid, here are the few gold cars we think look super classy.
Perfect for the city, this Golden Aston Martin Cygnet is a luxury car based on the Toyota IQ and is powered with a 1.3 litter straight-four engine which provides 98bhp and 123Nm of torque. Driving around town couldn't get better.
Late in 2011 a Middle Eastern businessman shelled out $8 million for this gold-plated Rolls Royce Phantom EWB. Designer Stuart Hughes and Eurocash AG of Switzerland turned the car into a gold army tank.
The designers replaced the car's chrome trim on the grill, door handles, trunk lid, hinges, and other hardware with 18-karat gold. On the security front, it can withstand 570 AK-47 shots, and also two grenade blasts at the same time. Only two of the cars have been created so far.
McLaren Automotive, which also owns a Formula 1 team of the same name, unveiled a gold and ruby-studded McLaren SLR 999 in 2010. Work of Swiss auto designer Ueli Anliker, the Anliker McLaren SLR 999 Red Gold Dream is plated with more than 5kg of gold and 600 rubies. Gold-painted leather seats, gold or ruby buttons and gold and ruby dollar-style SLR logos on the wheels finish the look. The car is worth about $5.2 million. Check it out here.
This Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano has been worked on by styling and tuning solutions company Hamann and there's some top-level tuning in the car already. The car, apparently, belongs to a wealthy, high-profile entity from Dubai.
This car may have just entered the Indian market, but a certain Russian biggie was spotted driving this sedan around town a couple of years back. All that we know about the owner is that he is way under 30.
This is, well, not the best car in the garage, but it's Indian and here it is. The Tata Group's Nano car was tweaked by the guys at Goldplus Jewellery, another Tata Group company, which covered every inch of the tiny car with the precious yellow metal.
The car's body is made with 80kg 22 carat solid gold, 15kg silver, precious stones - including diamonds and rubies - and other gemstones.
