Virgin lounges are now admitting Qantas frequent flyers

Virgin Australia has revealed its latest tactic to steal lucrative business flyers away from its rival Qantas: allow Qantas lounge members access to its own lounges.

Qantas frequent flyers with gold status or above have free access to Qantas airport lounges, as do Qantas Club members that pay a fee for the privilege. Now Virgin Australia, until the end of August, is allowing those travellers to also access Virgin lounges.

The catch is that the passenger must be flying on a domestic Virgin “economy X” ticket that day. The economy X service, for an additional fee on top of the normal economy fare, provides 7.5cm additional legroom, priority boarding and dedicated overhead compartment space.

Qantas frequent flyers that are taking advantage of the promotion may also admit one guest that’s also travelling on an economy X ticket. Both travellers are allowed into the lounge a maximum of 2 hours prior to the flight departure.

Virgin Australia has fewer airport lounges than Qantas, with facilities in all the mainland capitals plus Alice Springs, Cairns, Gold Coast and Mackay.
