With the new playoff format, there was a renewed emphasis on winning divisions this season and avoiding a 1-game playoff. Still, some wondered how much teams would celebrate winning their division if they had already clinched a playoff berth.
The Yankees and A’s faced this scenario yesterday when both, having already secured playoff berths, clinched their respective division titles. And the celebrations couldn’t have been more different, with the A’s going nuts and the Yankees exchanging a few hugs and high-fives.
Of course, the Yankees first learned they won their division prior to the end of their own game when the Orioles lost to the Rays (of course, you could say the same about the A’s who had a seemingly insurmountable 12-5 lead). And also, there’s the “been there, done that” aspect of the Yankees, who have won their division 12 of the last 15 years. Still one of the videos below is fun, and the other is not.
