Elon Musk on Tuesday night unveiled the first tunnel completed by The Boring Company, his passion-project firm.

The Boring Company released footage of a Tesla being lowered into the tunnel and fixed on rails before speeding through the neon-lit passage and finally being lifted by an elevator on the other side.

Musk said in a speech at the tunnel opening that the fastest the company had been able to transport a car through it so far was 110 mph. But he acknowledged that this top speed was “a little scary” and said people would be going through at about 40 to 50 mph. He added that the system was designed to transport vehicles at over 150 mph.

The completed tunnel segment, which stretches over a mile from SpaceX’s headquarters just outside Los Angeles, was designed as a test for major tunnelling projects in cities.
