Missy Franklin just set the world record in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:04.06.
The world record was previously set by Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe with a time of 2:04.81 at the World Championships in Rome in 2009. Missy surpassed that mark by 0.75 seconds.
This is Missy’s third gold medal and fourth overall in London. It’s also the first time the U.S. has won this event since 1972 when Melissa Belote took gold in Munich.
Fellow American Elizabeth Beisel took the bronze.
