A Flyers Player Got A One-Game Suspension For Demolishing An Opponent With A Massive Hit To The Head

Claude Giroux of the Philadelphia Flyers completely laid out New Jersey Devils’ centre Dainius Zubrus with a vicious hit to the head Sunday.

The hit came at the end of the second period in Game 4 when Giroux became so frustrated with what he thought were some bad calls from the referees that he chose to take it out on Zubrus.

Although there have been plenty of big, unnecessary hits these playoffs, the NHL has been hesitant to take swift action. We’ll see if that will change Monday when Giroux has a hearing to decide his fate.

UPDATE: The NHL has suspended Giroux for one game.

As the video shows, Zubrus no longer had possession of the puck and Giroux clearly went for his head. It doesn’t really look inadvertent or accidental at all (via Puck Daddy).
