Comcast-owned sports network Versus will officially change its name to NBC Sports Network, according to USAToday‘s Michael McCarthy. The change will formally take effect in January 2012.

Former NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol announced last spring that the network would get a makeover, following the completion of the Comcast-NBC merger.

The change also positions NBC for its big Olympic push next summer, by bringing all its sports broadcasting partners under the same peacock-coloured umbrella.

It’s the second name change in the short life of the network that began in 1995 as the Outdoor Life Network.
