Usain Bolt has never run a mile (seriously)

Usain Bolt hasn’t run a mile. Ever.

Bolt’s agent confirmed to the New Yorker that the Olympic sprinter has, in fact, never run that far. Here’s the exact quote:

Bolt’s agent, Ricky Simms, won’t say whether he believes that his client could run a mile in less than five minutes. But Simms confirmed, over email, that the world’s greatest sprinter has, in fact, never tried running that far: “Usain has never run a mile.”

Apparently there’s no need to compete in other events when you already hold six Olympic medals, three world records, and can run at speeds of up to 27 miles per hour.

Sources in the New Yorker piece speculated that Bolt couldn’t run a mile anywhere near as fast as current record holder Hicham El Guerrouj, who did it in three minutes, 43 seconds.

One running expert even said that, if he could, he’d “bet up to six figures” that Bolt couldn’t run a mile in less than five minutes — a relatively unimpressive feat achieved by some 23,000 high school runners each year. (Ouch.)

Unless Bolt tries, we’ll never know. But he’s probably too busy perfecting his sprint (and his signature point) to care.
