Ukraine‘s Environment Minister Mykola Zlochevsky has vowed to free bears kept for entertainment purposes in restaurants, reports Reuters. The bears are often forced to drink vodka for customers’ enjoyment.
“On television, they keep showing bears suffering in restaurants and roadside hotels,” Zlochevsky was quoted as saying. “How long can we tolerate animal torture in restaurants where drunken guests make bears drink vodka for laughs?”
The Ukraine and Russia have long been criticised by the West for their allegedly cruel treatment of bears. Just this month a bear that performed in the 1980 Moscow Olympics was found in squalid conditions on the outskirts of St Petersberg.
