A super-fight between boxing great Floyd Mayweather and UFC star Conor McGregor could be announced imminently.
In the space of 24 hours, there have been two big developments:
- First, Mayweather’s company, Mayweather Promotions, reserved the MGM Grand Garden Arena for a “boxing event” in August.
- Second, McGregor has teased fans with a big announcement in the coming days
The unprecedented coming together has been teased for months, but things have been moving forward in recent weeks.
Discussions went from fantasy to reality when UFC boss Dana White claimed in May that McGregor had finalised his terms for the fight. Then, days later, Mayweather explained that the bout could happen “very quickly.“
Now it appears the fight could happen within the next three months.
Mayweather Promotions have reserved the MGM Grand Garden Arena, a famous Las Vegas site, for Saturday, August 26. Below is a screengrab from the Nevada Athletic Commission calendar, which shows the booking.
The Commission website said: “Mayweather Promotions will promote a professional boxing event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, televised on Showtime.” No other details were given.
Mayweather Promotions represent a number of fighters including Gervonta Davis, Badou Jack, and J’Leon Love. But these three fighters are yet to develop a star appeal capable of luring fans to Las Vegas, the boxing capital of the world.
Mayweather certainly does. The unbeaten American has even exclusively competed in the 16,800 capacity arena since 2007 (12 fights in a row). The MGM is effectively his home arena.
It doesn’t end there. McGregor has also released a cryptic statement on his official Instagram account.
Next to this portrait of himself, McGregor said: “Something big is coming.”
Could it be a Mayweather v McGregor announcement? All signs point to a lucrative summer showdown.
