A police employee was shot dead by a gunman who was in turn shot and killed by NSW Special Constables at the police headquarters building in Charles Street, Parramatta on Friday afternoon.
The incident occurred at around 4.30pm and it appears the police IT specialist was deliberately targeted and killed with a single shot. It’s believed not to be terrorism related, but the gunman fired more rounds at approaching police before he was killed.
He has not yet been identified and relatives of the police employee are still being contacted.
NSW police commissioner Andrew Scipione said the motive wasn’t known.
“Obviously this is a very distressing time for us all as we investigate all the circumstances,” he said.
“The assailant remained in the street here in Charles Street before he then fired several further shots at our special constables as they emerged from police headquarters.
“In viewing video footage, I have witnessed enormous bravery by those special constables who responded. They were brave and they were professional.
“Naturally we are supporting all our staff involved in this terrible episode.”
The Commissioner said police are “keeping an open mind” about the cause of the attack and there was nothing to fear.
“Go about your business including this weekend’s major sporting events. We will do our job and get to the bottom of what has happened,” Scipione said.
Anyone with any information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
