Here’s why we don’t think Google is about to buy Twitter.Twitter is going on a massive international hiring spree—including a lot of ex-Googlers who likely aren’t planning on a quick roundtrip back to Mountain View.
Top among them, as TechCrunch noted, is Richard Alfonsi, who previously was a VP at Google in charge of display ad sales.
But Twitter has also snatched Googlers like Don O’Leary, who seems to be playing a key role in building up Twitter’s European presence, and Shailesh Rao, who joined in February to run Asia-Pacific sales.
Twitter has 40 jobs open, mostly in its London, Tokyo, and Dublin offices. The majority of those are in sales.
The most reasonable interpretation for this push: Twitter CEO Dick Costolo and sales chief Adam Bain finally feel like they’ve cracked the code on Twitter’s advertising product, and can now use the massive amount of cash Twitter has raised to scale up its sales operation and take it international.
