Tumblr has hired Chris Mohney, a senior VP for content at Blackbook, and Jessica Bennett, a senior writer and editor at Newsweek/The Daily Beast, to cover… well, Tumblr. As we reported, Tumblr had plans to hire an editorial team to cover its content, and the New York Times’ Brian Stelter has the names. Mohney’s official position is editor-in-chief, and Bennett’s is executive editor.
“Basically, if Tumblr were a city of 42 million,” Ms. Bennett said, referring to the number of Tumblr blogs that exist, “I’m trying to figure out how we cover the ideas, themes and people who live in it.”
This sounds similar to how Facebook will be using its managing editor, Dan Fletcher — a combination of managing internal writing about the network, documenting the network’s activity, and marketing the network to its community.
Tumblr did tell Stelter it wants Bennett and Mohney to do “real journalism,” so we’ll see what exactly that means.
