The White House press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, on Thursday morning defended President Donald Trump after he referred to Republicans who opposed him – sometimes called Never Trumpers – as “human scum.”

In an appearance on “Fox and Friends,” Grisham was asked whether Trump regretted referring to Republicans who opposed him in that manner.

“No, no he shouldn’t,” Grisham said. “The people who are against him, and who have been against him and working against him since the day they took office, are just that. It is horrible that people are working against a president who’s delivering results for this country and has been since day one.”

Grisham added: “The fact that people continue to try to negate anything he is doing and take away from the good work he is doing on behalf of the American people – they deserve strong language like that.”

Grisham, who replaced Sarah Huckabee Sanders, has garnered a reputation for fiercely defending the president.

She has not held any traditional White House press briefings since she assumed the role in July and has instead opted to appear on conservative-leaning programs like “Fox and Friends.”

Grisham’s comments came after Trump on Wednesday tweeted: “The Never Trumper Republicans, though on respirators with not many left, are in certain ways worse and more dangerous for our Country than the Do Nothing Democrats. Watch out for them, they are human scum!”

Trump has been on the receiving end of sharp criticism in recent weeks linked to the escalating Ukraine scandal and related impeachment inquiry, as well as his Syria retreat and ultimately cancelled move to hold the next G7 summit at one of his Florida properties.

Numerous Republican lawmakers have lambasted the president over these developments, particularly regarding Syria and his decision to abandon Kurdish forces there to a Turkish military operation.

Trump has lashed out at his critics and has sought to paint career officials who have provided damning testimony against him as traitorous or motivated by partisanship.
