During NBC’s “Football Night in America” telecast, Tony Dungy and Dan Patrick discussed Dungy’s former team, the Colts, and the NFL Draft. And Dungy stunned some folks when was asked which quarterback he preferred…Dungy: “I believe [the Colts] will take a quarterback…I wouldn’t pencil in Andrew Luck just yet…The more I’ve seen Robert Griffin, the more I like him.”
Patrick: “Would you take him over Andrew Luck?”
Dungy: “The way the game is going now, I love the athleticism; I would lean towards Robert Griffin.”
This is a pretty surprising statement on a couple of levels. Luck’s game is obviously more similar to that of Peyton Manning, and it was Manning that helped Dungy get over the hump and finally win a Super Bowl. Dungy was just 5-8 in playoff games prior to winning the Super Bowl. Also, Luck would seem to be better suited to run the Colts offence that is already installed.
So if there is any doubt between the two, Luck would seem like the safer choice. And Dungy, who never saw field goal he didn’t like while coaching the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is typically a “safe” coach.
