Tiger Woods And NBC Prep For U.S. Open

Tiger Woods already made his disappointing return. Are we sick of him now?

Hoping to follow-up on CBS’ success with The Masters, NBC is getting into the golf game by airing the U.S. Open during primetime.GE’s NBC will broadcast the third round of the tournament on June 19 from 4:30 – 11 p.m. ET.  The fourth and final round will air the next day until 9 p.m. ET., according to Variety.

Disney’s ESPN will also air the first two rounds of the Pebble Beach golf tournament in primetime, on Thursday and Friday from 1 – 3 p.m. ET and 5 – 10 p.m. ET.

Golf fans will certainly be watching for Woods to overtake Phil Mickelson. The U.S. Open also has a (brief) history of success in the primetime slot.  The tournament first aired in primetime only two years ago. It earned the highest U.S. Open viewership in six years, and the third-best Sunday rating in U.S. Open history, according to a release from ESPN.

But NBC’s ratings still might not reach CBS’ staggering viewership.

A huge chunk of the audience only tuned into the Masters to catch Tiger Woods’ first return to golf. And now that Woods is officially back in the mix, this viewership will dwindle.
