Three men have been charged after they went spearfishing at night in a hotel pond in the middle of Cairns in far north Queensland.

Police allege one of three 18-year-olds used a spear gun to catch a large barramundi on Wednesday in a pond in the foyer of the Hilton Double Tree.

The fish is reported to have been one-metre long.

Three men have been charged with one count of trespass and unlawfully injuring an animal. They are due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on August 21.
