We are now two weeks from the beginning of Spring Training and the biggest name still sitting out there on the free agent market is Vladimir Guerrero. When the off-season began, it was reported that Vlad was looking for a two-year deal worth $16 million. But with the 2011 season looming, it is now looking like Vlad the Impaler will get only a fraction of that.
And when the Rangers traded for Mike Napoli (see our MLB offseason transaction tracker), the Angels traded for Vernon Wells, and the A’s and Rays signed Hideki Matsui and Manny respectively, the number of teams looking for a DH got very small. In fact, the only team bidding for Vlad’s services might be the Orioles. And their offer is just one-year and approximately $5 million.
So at this point, the Orioles best move may be to sit back and just wait for Guerrero’s ego to deflate a little. And when it does, and Vlad realises that he is out of options, the Orioles are going to get a solid hitter at a reasonable price.
