The NYPD and the FBI are investigating this computer graphic that was posted to an internet site linked to al-Qaeda.
In a twist on al-Qaeda’s vehemently anti-American stance, the graphic looks like a Hollywood movie poster as it drives its message home. Yet it advertises an ominous message that’s so far been unfounded, according to the NYPD.
NBC News reports that the image was found on a radical overseas site and reads: “Al Qaeda Coming Soon Again in New York.”
NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said the “NYPD intelligence division is aware of it and investigating.”
He added that the NYPD is working to try to determine what individual or group posted the threat on the website; it is now being spread across numerous extremist forums. The NYPD says there is no evidence of any plot or new specific threat to the region.
And it’s worth pointing out that Al-Qaeda web forums often post threats and rants from extremists and sympathizers.
The first comment on NBC’s Facebook post about this image was: “what a bunch of crap!” — perhaps in reference to the credibility of the graphic’s message.
The graphic was found in the “artwork and design” section of a militant website, reports Reuters.
The FBI says they’re also investigating.
