Retail technology company ShelfX has invented a vending fridge that does everything on its own, and it’s pretty cool. The fridge combines QR codes, RFID cards, mobile apps and smart shelves to do a variety of things to make self-checkout possible.
So, how do you use it?
First, you download an app which stores account and payment information, and use your phone to scan the QR code that’s on the fridge to unlock it.
Then, you can take whatever you want from it. It knows the exact number and types of products that you took from the shelves, and the billing process is fully automated over a wireless connection. It even knows when you put something back, and it won’t charge you for it.
All businesses have to do is make sure the fridge is always stocked.
The fridge is targeted at places like schools, hotels and gyms. It runs for $599 (though the DIY retrofit kit costs $299).
