Williston, North Dakota sits dead centre atop the Bakken Formation, an oil deposit that just gets bigger each time geologists examine it. Latest estimates put it at 640 square miles and people from across the country are flocking here for work.
Housing is a real problem; people sleep in their cars, pay outrageous rent, and snap up hotel rooms whenever they become available.
Construction projects like this Hampton Inn are popping up all over, but many are already rented by oil companies for the indefinite future to house their employees. Halliburton alone will add an estimated 2,500 employees here this year.
