Even though he spent half his life in prison, an elderly mobster couldn’t stop himself from planning heists well into his 70s.A Chicago judge sentenced Arthur Rachel to about eight and a half years in prison for plotting robberies and burglaries with a longtime cohort, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Rachel, nicknamed “The Brain” achieved notoriety for stealing the Marlborough Diamond in England.
Rachel and his accomplice stole the 26-carat diamond in 1980.
When U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber asked the ageing mobster why he risked spending his remaining years in prison, Rachel’s answer was pretty simple.
What else did he have to do?
“Nobody takes it seriously, your honour,” Rachel said, according to the Tribune. “It’s the way we are. We got nothing better to do. We sit around talking.”
