These Ads Say What Depressed Copywriters Are Actually Thinking

Four aspiring copywriters who just graduated from a two-year copy writing masters program at VBU Barndcenter have created a Tumblr for depressed copywriters.Basically, it’s what glossy magazine ads would look like if their writers weren’t taking their meds. The gaggle of aspiring copywriters goes to a local bar, drinks, and alters ad buys with snarky quips on scraps of paper—changing an Amway ad to read “Behind Amway products, there’s a slave story.” Womp womp.

When interviewed for Digiday, the group, half of whom are still in the interview process, aren’t worried that it will jeopardize their careers in copy writing. “That honestly never crossed our minds,” said Whitney Ruef, 24. “We figured that the kind of places we want to work for would think this is funny. Hopefully.”

Ruef and Mariana Oliveira are still job hunting. Chris Sheldon, 27, and Tedd Wood, 31, have gigs lined up at McKinney and AKQA, respectively.
