Immigration has long been a hot topic in Europe, but in recent years the issue seems to have gone mainstream, helping meteoric rise of far-right nationalist parties in countries like France, Ukraine, and the Netherlands, among others. The financial crisis, coupled with rising unemployment and increased immigration has only given them more ammunition.Even government officials have made disparaging comments about race (often with little to no official censure).

We decided to look at the issue on a city by city level, using data from the EU’s ‘Perception survey on quality of life in European cities‘. The last one was conducted in November 2009 and released in 2010, and measure local perceptions of standard of living in 75 cities in Europe.

In each city, 500 randomly selected citizens (aged 15 and older) from all backgrounds were interviewed as representative of the wider population. In total, more than 37,500 interviews were conducted.

Among other questions, they were asked if they thought the presence of foreigners was good for the city, with the option to reply “strongly agree“, “somewhat agree“, “somewhat disagree“, “strongly disagree“, and “don’t know“.

These are the cities that most strongly disagreed with the presence of foreigners (note, as per the study, we included “don’t know” answers as negatives).
