In the meantime, a site called Factbrowser gathered the following stats to show just how widely these gadgets have been adopted.

  • Tablets took less than 2 years to reach 40 million devices in the US, outpacing smartphones, which took 7 years according to comScore
  • Forrester expects 112.5 million adults in the US will own a tablet in 2016, equalling 34% of U.S. adults, up from around 9% today
  • Per NPD DisplaySearch, Apple had a ~59% share of the tablet PC market in Q4 2011, followed by Amazon at 16.7% and Samsung at 6.7%. And TrendForce expects Apple to hold on to its 50%+ share through 2015
  • The US accounts for 43% of the 55 million iPads Apple has sold according to Forrester
  • Per Juniper Research, tablets accounted for 7% of global app revenues in 2011 and are expected to account for 25% by 2016

  • According to InMobi, 29% of web users plan to buy the iPad 3, 54% of whom do not already own a tablet
  • According to NPD Group, more than 40% of iPad owners have a household income of $100k or more, vs 26% of non-iPad owners
  • Per Nielsen, 43% of tablet owners are female
  • 7 of every 10 children under 12 in tablet-owning households use the device according to Nielsen
  • Almost 20% of Latina mums own tablets according toMamiverse
  • Almost 40% of Boomers own tablets according to MediaPost

  • IPad owners love to shop. According to Zmags, iPad owners drive twice as many retail purchases per person as users of other devices
  • And according to Adobe, the average order value of tablet users on retail sites in 2011 was $123, vs. $102 for traditional PCs and $80 for smartphone users
  • 40% of US tablet and smartphone owners use them while watching TV according to Nielsen
  • 71% of adult and 79% of teen tablet owners play games on their tablet for at least an hour a month per Parks Associates
  • Almost 60% of tablet users in the US use them to watch video according to Ad Age
  • 58% of tablet users consume news on the device according to comScore
  • 37% of US tablet owners take them to work according to Forrester
