Smartphone penetration still has a long way to go, even in the U.S. According to comScore’s latest smartphone market share numbers, U.S. smartphone penetration is 47 per cent at the end of the second quarter.

While Android and iOS continue to cement their dominant position, the scale of the market opportunity is so large that it can still support the emergence of a third platform, as many are clamoring for. With global smartphone penetration at ~10 per cent, the “platform wars” are just beginning.
