So the news of the day isn’t Romney’s big Florida victory, but rather Romney’s gaffe on CNN where he said he didn’t care about poor people. Maybe the line wasn’t that bad in context, we’re not sure. Most likely in a day people will have moved on, so no huge foul.
But here’s what’s interesting.
Romney is getting blasted from the right.
Jonah Goldberg at The National Review asked: What is wrong with this guy?
Michelle Malkin put up the title: “Let them eat food stamps.”
On Twitter, the right is crushing him.
What this means is: The right hasn’t accepted Romney as the nominee yet. They’re not rallying around him, as they would if they were sold on him. If they were sold on him, they’d be rallying around him, talking about how critics are taking this out of context, and so on. And if this “gaffe” happened in September or October, they certainly would be.
But right now, they’re still not in defence mode, and that’s telling.
