The Post-PC Era: iPad Sales Race Past PCs

This chart, shown at the beginning of Apple’s big iPad announcement yesterday, tells you all you need to know about the post-PC era. Apple shipped more iPads in the fourth quarter of last year than PCs by any of the major hardware companies. Note: this doesn’t even include the 6.6 million Macs shipped in that quarter.

The other eye-popping detail from this chart is that none of those four hardware companies have any toehold in the smartphone or tablet market. As we keep hammering home, tablets and smartphones are about to blow PC sales out of the water. The one-time giants of the computing world, in other words, are about to be left in the dust.
