One of the few surprises in today’s Apple event was the name of the main product it was announcing.
It’s the iPad.
This is the third generation iPad, and it’s quite a bit better than the iPad 2. But Apple didn’t give it a name like iPad 3 or iPad 3D or iPad 2S or anything. It’s just “the new iPad.”
That led developer Jonas Lekevicius to predict that the next iPhone will be called “the new iPhone.”
That could create a problem for carriers like AT&T.
Right now, their product pages are filled with different versions of the iPhone at different prices. It’s going to be awfully hard for consumers to figure out which phone they want if they’re all called the same thing.
Except — most people don’t shop that way.
Going in, they probably have a rough idea which kind of phone they want: iPhone, Android (maybe from a specific company like Samsung), or maybe a BlackBerry or Nokia. They have some idea how much they’re willing to pay. That’s about it.
Most people probably look at AT&T’s page and have no idea what the difference is between the iPhone 4S and 4 and 3G. Except they probably figure that the bigger numbers are newer, and so in some way better.
A couple years from now, they’ll just see “iPhone” and a bunch of different price points. If they dig down, they can see the exact specs.
That’s better for Apple’s brand, and less confusing for buyers.
