A video captures the test shot of the U.S. Navy’s first ever electromagnetic railgun.
It’s a long-range weapon that fires projectiles using electricity and magnetic fields instead of chemical propellants. Speeds of Mach 7 can be reached. In the video below you can see the air being ripped apart.
The prototype launcher at the Naval Surface Warfare centre Dahlgren Division is now undergoing a series of full-energy tests that will bring the Navy closer to a gun system capable of destroying surface, air, and ground targets with electromagnetic technology generated within seconds. It eliminates the danger of storing high explosives onboard ships.
