More than half of Australian employees (58%) think its okay to fudge their work expense claims as long as they are sensible about it, according to global research
Among the more outrageous claims made are for anniversary dinners and condoms, according to a survey by expense management software maker webexpenses.
Mileage, the most commonly claimed form of transport, is also the most rorted with 42% admitting to increasing the distance they travelled.
The respondents confessing to adding “just a few dollars for extra kilometres”.

The survey results indicate employees increasingly believe they deserve a reward if they put the hours in.
The survey had 22% of Australian respondents confessing to taking a friend or partner out for a meal and claiming it back as client entertainment.
One person said they claimed back an anniversary dinner as a client meeting.
The research suggests that the tactic of “little and often” seems to be the most common and safest form of fraud.
However, there are still those trying their luck with more brazen expenses. One respondent claimed condoms and another pet insurance premiums.
“The results bring to light the changing patterns of expense fraud, the shift to more subtle methods to efficiently enable claims to fall through the cracks and raise no red flags,” says Ryan Corlett, webexpenses general manager for Australia and North America.
“The most prominent area being exaggerating mileage claims, this could be a result of employees feeling it’s completely innocent just rounding up mileage and with a manual process it’s a lot harder to identify.”
Almost a third (31%) said there were a lack of adequate checks to keep fraud under control at their place of work.
The research was carried out by onepoll in July 2017, with 4,000 office workers from the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand.
