Lord Mayor of Melbourne Robert Doyle has resigned after allegations of sexual harassment were made against him.
Doyle was accused of misconduct and sexual harassment by two council colleagues late last year.
The allegations were followed by an investigation by the City of Melbourne, led by Dr Ian Freckelton QC.
Last week the investigation was delayed as Doyle grappled with health issues.
Doyle resigned on Sunday night, although he continues to deny the allegations and says he has been denied natural justice.
“The City of Melbourne understands, via the Lord Mayor’s lawyers, that the formalities of his resignation will shortly be completed and we are now operating on that basis,” a spokesperson told the ABC.
The council says the investigation would continue and a by-election will be held to fill the position of lord mayor.
The ABC has more.
