It basically echoes the prevailing sentiment around Europe, which is that his mere existence as PM is causing the bond market to lose faith in any ability for Italy to reform, this blowing out yields, thus threatening the entire system.

Bear in mind that according to the FT, Berlusconi’s own Fin Min told him, basically, that if he doesn’t quit, there’s going to be a market bloodbath on Monday.
