MAJOR outrage we’ve just been informed of.Eva Kaili, who is one of the up and coming members of PASOK (and a TV journalist and an architect), has won her district in the second biggest city in Greece.
BUT! PASOK only has limited seats, and according to a source, Venizelos will have someone else take her seat. UPDATE: It turns out Venizelos is going to take Kaili’s seat himself!
This is how it works in a parliamentary system, we suppose.
There is regional representation, but when your party gets creamed overall, they have to make priorities about who gets what seat.
Still, Kailli was clearly an up and coming politician with strong support among the youth (a demographic that’s abandoning PASOK. We have to say this sounds very short-sighted.
We’re told there is a possibility that she could regain her seat in the June elections (assuming there are June elections) if PASOK performs better, and if Venizelos changes his mind, or if PASOK does better in her district.
We’re monitor the situation for developments.
