Since Jason Calacanis created gadget blog Engadget in 2004, the site has gone through three top editors: Peter Rojas, Ryan Block, and Josh Topolsky.Today, a fourth takes over: Tim Stevens.
What’s cute is: People in media – those at Engadget, those leaving Engadget, and those writing about Engadget – all think readers care.
Readers do not care.
What works at Engadget – and most successfully scaled media properties – is a certain type of formulaic coverage.
It’s a good formula, mind you. Rojas, Block, and Topolsky deserve credit for crafting and enhancing it.
But if Stevens doesn’t screw that formula up, readers aren’t going to go anywhere just because they won’t see Topolsky’s byline anymore.
Here are the top 10 comments on Stevens’s Hi-I-Am-Your-New-Editor post (something he probably shouldn’t have written):

These words do not sound like the words of distraught readers to us. They sound like the words of readers who have never, and will never, look at bylines or mastheads. You know, like most readers.
